Feature Wall Repair and Decorating in an East London New Build
Earlier this year I carried out a painting and decorating project in East London for a young professional who had recently moved into a new build apartment. The brief was focused on refreshing a single feature wall, but the job quickly became more involved once work got underway.
The Brief
The client wanted an existing feature wall wallpaper removed, the wall properly prepared, and then finished with a clean, modern painted look to suit the rest of the apartment.
This type of work is common in new build properties across London, Watford, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, where decorative finishes don’t always come away as cleanly as expected.
Unexpected Challenges
Once the wallpaper was stripped, it became clear that the plasterboard surface had been badly damaged, with large areas pulling away along with the old paper. This meant the wall required far more preparation than originally anticipated.
The process included:
Extensive filling and repairing of damaged plasterboard
Careful sanding to restore a flat, even surface
Applying two coats of heavy-duty lining paper to stabilise the wall before painting
This level of preparation is essential to achieve a long-lasting finish, especially on compromised surfaces.
Preparation and Finish
After lining and allowing sufficient drying time, the wall was painted to create a smooth, durable finish that blended seamlessly with the rest of the space. Despite the challenges, the extra preparation ensured the final result looked clean, sharp, and professionally finished.
The Result
What started as a simple feature wall refresh turned into a full repair and re-preparation job, but the end result was a properly finished wall that will hold up well over time.
