Huge House Refurbishment in Mill End, Rickmansworth – Part 1: Mist Coating 15 Rooms

Preparing a freshly plastered new-build home for decoration

Some decorating projects are bigger than others, and this refurbishment in Mill End, Rickmansworth, was certainly one of them!

I was brought in to work on a substantial house refurbishment, starting with one of the most important stages of any newly plastered interior: mist coating.

With 15 freshly plastered rooms to tackle, this was a sizeable job and the first step towards transforming the property into a beautifully finished home.

Why mist coating matters

When plaster has dried properly, it needs to be prepared before the final decorative coats of paint can be applied. Fresh plaster is highly absorbent, so applying ordinary finishing paint straight onto it can cause problems with adhesion and the final appearance.

A suitable mist coat helps seal the porous surface and provides a sound base for the subsequent coats of paint.

Getting this stage right is particularly important on a project of this size. With 15 rooms to prepare, consistency and attention to detail throughout the property were essential.

15 freshly plastered rooms – a big job from the start

Working through a whole house with freshly plastered walls and ceilings requires a methodical approach. Each room needs to be assessed, the plaster needs to be sufficiently dry, and the surfaces need to be ready before painting begins.

The mist coating stage laid the foundations for the decorating work still to come. Although it might not be the most glamorous part of a refurbishment, it's one of those jobs that makes a real difference to the quality of the finished result.

This was only the beginning of the project, with plenty more preparation, painting and decorating to follow.

Following the refurbishment – Part 2 coming soon

Because this was such a large project, I'm documenting the work in a series of blog posts, showing the different stages of the refurbishment from start to finish.

In the next instalment, I'll be sharing more of the work carried out at this Mill End property as the rooms progressed beyond the initial mist coating stage.
